The 2025 Open Championship Overview & Predictions

The 2025 Open Championship Overview & Predictions

The Claret Jug is up for grabs as Northern Ireland's Royal Portrush Golf Club plays host to the 153rd edition of The Open Championship. Dunluce Castle (and its historic ruins) loom large in the distance as the world's greatest golfers attempt to tame both the rolling hills and the elements.

The 2025 Open Championship presents an exciting mix of new and old. Get ready for former champions Padraig Harrington, Ernie Els, and Phil Mickelson to tee off alongside the new generation of masters. This year, Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and 2024 Open Championship winner Xander Schauffele are all vying for victory.

Golf club and ball

There’s no denying that Mother Nature plays a starring role at The Open. But if anyone can rise to the challenge, it’s the world-class field assembled for golf’s oldest Major.

The Open Championship Returns to Royal Portrush

In 2024, The Open Championship made a splash at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland. Now, golf fans are asking: Where is the 2025 Open Championship being played?

This year, the Royal Portrush Golf Club hosts The Open Championship for the third time. This marks the first return to Royal Portrush since 2019, when local Irish linksman Shane Lowry etched his name on The Claret Jug with a decisive six-stroke victory.

Golf enthusiasts eagerly anticipate this event — a welcome change of pace from the thoroughly manicured and engineered golf courses that play host to many PGA Tour events.

While the US Open goes to painstaking lengths to make the course as difficult as possible, The Open Championship allows for a lower-scoring, more organic style of play.

Speaking to the simple challenges presented by this unique destination, iconic golf writer Bernard Darwin referenced the "combined soundness and subtlety of the architecture," adding that he found it "hard to imagine a more admirable test of golf."

2025 Open Championship Dates and TV Schedule

Once the summer golf season heats up, a common query takes over: "When is the 2025 Open Championship?" This exciting event keeps golf enthusiasts enthralled in mid-July, making it the perfect follow-up to the excitement of the U.S. Open.

The 153rd Open Championship begins on Thursday, July 18th, with first and second-round coverage exclusively on Peacock. Weekend viewers can enjoy live coverage on Peacock as well as NBC. Final round play wraps up on Sunday, July 20th. Of course, weather is always a factor at The Open Championship, and should play spill into Monday (it's happened twice, after all), NBC and Peacock will carry the drama to its thrilling conclusion..

Top Contenders and Possible Sleepers

A quick recap of last year's event should provide a great deal of insight into what's to come at Royal Portrush. In 2024, golfers contended with a heavy dose of wind and rain, especially later in the day.

While the wind stuck around on Sunday, the rain held off long enough for Xander Schauffele to take advantage of third-round leader Billy Horschel's early hole struggles. Schauffele played bogey-free golf en route to his first Open Championship victory, as his final-round 65 was good enough for a two-stroke victory over Horschel and the late-charging Justin Rose.

The 2025 World Golf Rankings feature three players with names already etched onto the Claret Jug. The fresh-faced Rory McIlroy, for example, won at Royal Liverpool in 2014, taking home his third Major at just 25 years old.

The fourth-ranked player in the world — Collin Morikawa — was even younger when he won at Royal St. George's in 2021. The then-24-year-old made his Open Championship debut by winning it all. Meanwhile, the third-ranked Schauffele defeated the field and the elements to win his second Major.

All three of these players —plus the top-ranked Scottie Scheffler — should be in the mix to do great things at Royal Portrush in 2025, but that doesn't mean there aren't some sleepers in the field.

The ultimate example? U.S. Open winner J.J. Spaun, who is quickly making his way up the rankings. He is joined by Norway's Viktor Hovlund and American Russell Henley, who both have 2025 PGA Tour victories under their belt and are coming off top-10 finishes at The U.S. Open.
